Ford Ctiy Beginnings
The story begins in 1884, when Mr. Andrew Russell paid a visit to the present site of Ford, called it a "good place for a townsite" and proceeded to organize the Ford Town Company. They were Rueben Small - president, William Shaw - secretary and Andy Russell- treasurer. They in turn appointed city appraisers who were G. W. Milton, Judge Whitelaw and Chalk Beeson, all of Dodge City. General Fonda was hired to do the surveying.
On May 15, 1885 all the necessary legalities were finished and the platte was filed at the land office in Garden City, but in order to incorporated they needed 200 people.
The City of Ford was declared "Incoporated" on the 3rd day of October 1887, by the Board of County County Commissioners in Dodge City. At this meeting, a petition was presented showing the number of inhabitants at 261. Also presented was poof the the petition had been published in the Ford Boomer for three consecutive weeks, commencing September 2, 1887 and ending September 23, 1887. It was also stated at this meeting that the first election for city officers would be held on the 15th day of November 1887. This election was held in the Shaffer Building and the following were elected:
Mayor- W.S. Crouch
Police Judge- A.L. Wells
Councilmen- George Anderson, T.B. Lillard, W.L. Boyd, Lyman McKean, and Glen Lawrence.
The first City Council meeting was held on November 18, 1887, at the Boomer office. the oath of was taken by the new governing body, and these appointments were made;
City Clerk- Frank G Prouty
City Attorney- W.B. Shaw
City Treasurer- H.J. Smith
